Question by …: What are some good ways to increase muscle and strength in the upper body?
I’m a 13 year old girl, and I’m very active. But most of my strongest muscles are my leg muscles. I just need to increase my strength and muscle in my upper body including, abbs, byceps, triceps. and my wrist muscles for tennis. How do I do this? My dad is going to ask Gold’s Gym if I am old enough to go to the gym, but what are other ways?

Hello…

The easiest way to keep a clean diet is to not eat: fried foods, fast food, sodas, basically throw junk food away!

As far as protein you need 1 gram of protein per pound of weight.

180 pound person needs 180 grams of protein. (preferably from your diet, chicken, fish) But protein shakes can help add protein.

Good Luck!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Swimming and running don’t build big muscle, they mainly burn fat and build smaller, less bulky muscle. That’s why most swimmers and runners are not that bulky. You need a lot of protein, that’s the key for building mass. I would recommend buying whey protein powder from a place like Vitamin Shoppe. It really helps, because it has lots of protein and also it has BCAAs that enhance muscle growth. In order to get protein from food, you should not just eat meat, but also foods like cottage cheese and tuna. They are loaded with protein. As for training, I would recommend weight lifting, 2-3 times a week. Definitely do free weights over machines, as free weights allow for greater range of motion, and therefore works out the muscle more. There are plenty of plans out there for muscle mass building, just look them up. Good luck, and hope this helps.
